Ads Suck

Imagine for a moment you’re lying next to your significant other. The mood is right, you put your arms around them, and as you lean in, they stop you and say “Squarespace is offering 40% off this Black Friday! Go build your website today. The great thing about Squarespace is…”.

Or you’re listening to your favorite album playing on Spotify during the most stressful time of the year. It’s been a long, hard day, you’ve waited all day to crack open a beer and chill out, for this all-important private moment, and your favorite song is coming up and you’re excited, when all of a sudden you hear, “Are you protected by NordVPN? NordVPN allows you to…”

Moment ruined.

Ads suck. Whether it’s on YouTube, Spotify, your TV, your newspaper, ads suck.

Ads suck for four fundamental reasons.

  1. It’s not what you’re looking for or why you’re there. The ad is in the way. It is an obstacle, (which 1.7 billion people, 2 out of 3 YouTube users monthly using AdBlock have opted out of), adding to the distance between where you are and what you came for.

  2. It adds noise to the world. It’s an intrusion into your psyche. It says “We were too lazy to make something good enough to get your attention, so we’re now paying to disturb you”.

  3. It ruins our entertainment time. Our free time, free from commerce, along with our health, is the most valuable resource we own. It is the space that is the most private, the most intimate, where as individuals we’re truly free, and advertising leeches away it.

  4. In an effort to be marginally relevant, in the current infrastructure of our internet, every aspect of our lives has to be tracked, every personality trait segmented and monetized, in the hope of a click.
